Warrior Softball Week 7

On Thursday June 28th the big Game with Newell-Fonda was resumed at Warrior Field.  It was the top of the 4th inning with NF leading 2-1 when the Game began.  NF went right to work as the leadoff hitter got on base before being driven in to increase the lead 3-1.  The Warriors failed to score in the bottom and NF put another on the Board in the top of the 5th to go up 4-1.  In the bottom half Cassidy Brinkman started it off with a single and Megan Peterson sacrificed her down to 2B.  Two batters later Marlee Walker roped a 2-bagger to score Brinkman and cut the lead to 2-4 against NF ace Jenna Faline.  The Warrior Defense put the potent Mustang Offense down in order in the 6th & 7th innings and came up to bat in the bottom of the 7th needing to rally to win.  Brinkman led off once again and came through with a single.  Megan Peterson singled scoring Brinkman as the Mustang Defense overthrew 3rd in an attempt to get Brinkman.  Peterson ended up on 3B with the lead cut to 3-4 and no outs.  Erica Rittgers entered to pinch run and Jess Frahm put down a perfect Bunt forcing the Defense to make a decision.  Unfortunately the third baseman made a terrific fake throw to 1B and caught Rittgers with a throw back to 3B for a great defensive play.  With Frahm on 1B Marlee Walker came through with yet another clutch single moving Frahm into scoring position with 1 out.  Taylor Montgomery hit one back to the pitcher advancing the runners to 2B & 3B bringing up Clara Pearson.  Pearson hit a hard ground ball up the middle that the 2nd Baseman made a play on and the ball reached 1B the same time as Pearson.  It appeared that the First Baseman did not have control but the call was made as out number 3 just as Walker would have been scoring the winning run.  The Warriors were a mere fraction of a second from taking down one of the best Programs and Pitchers around and moving into a share of the Conference Lead.  Walker had 3 hits (2-2Bs) and Brinkman had 2 to lead the offense while Pearson fielded some extremely hard shots at 3B on defense.  In Game 2, a non-conference Game, the Warriors were down and out and the Mustangs took advantage with a rare 10 run win at Warrior Field.
On Friday night it was Senior Night with Poky as the opponent.  With the emotions of Senior Night you never know how it’s going to go, especially with 6 of them on the Field.  The Warriors failed to play their normal Game against the Maidens and led only 2-0 through 5 innings letting them hang around.  In the 6th they scored 1 to tighten up the Game and the Warriors responded with 1 in the bottom to lead 3-1.  In the top of the 7th Poky went nuts with 6 hits including a season first HR for their leadoff hitter to take a 7-3 lead.  In the bottom the Warriors got a rally going plating 3 to make it 6-7 with 2 outs and a runner on 3B but unfortunately she never made it home and it was a sad ending to Senior Night.  Dani Peterson had a terrific night with 3 hard-hit doubles, Pearson added 2 with a 2B and Brinkman had 2 hits.
On July 3rd the Warriors opened up Regional Play at Home against MNW.  Looking to get that elusive first round victory in post-season play, they finally got that monkey off Warrior Softball’s back with a convincing 13-1 win in 4 innings of play.  The offense was clicking again with 11 hits throughout the lineup led by Megan Peterson, Clara Pearson (2B), and Taylor Montgomery with 2 each.  Jess Frahm a.k.a. “Smooth” made a couple phenomenal defensive plays at short while Brinkman got the win and Natalie Lambert closed it out.  They will move on to the 2nd Round where they will travel to Harlan Rogers Park and face St Eds.
